It's easier to just not include it rather than have to try and deal with a bunch of stooges who aren't really going to listen to the other side of the argument anyway. That's the kind of thing that can kill a big chunk of sales. All it takes is one monkey to start ranting about it for mainstream media to pick it up, then blow it completely out of proportion. With most people being the simple, easily excitable herd animals they are, they can tend to glance over details and dive straight into outrage. It seems like I recall there being some ruckus when Fable allowed same sex marriage, and then a little less for Mass Effect(is that the one?). I agree with you that so long as it goes both ways it would be no big deal.
